Rant on the Music Industry

Hello, I’m pissed. I can’t help it. I’m currently unemployed and seeking new employment. I’ve been questioning the Music Industry… a lot. I find it ridiculous that I still want to pursue a career in this industry; an industry which starts its young, eager and not-so-jaded employees in the low 20Ks per year. An industry in which “everyone is dying to have your job” and will do anything for it. I, however, refuse to sacrifice my fucking values in doing so. I know my worth, my dedication, my intelligence, etc. when it comes to this and I will not settle to for some under paid, over worked (read: over stressed) occupation. I can’t remember the last time I really listened to music for its pure enjoyment. That, my friends, is very very sad (for someone like me at least).

I knew I wanted to work in the Music Industry ever since I was 15. I even majored in it in college. I interned my ass off, ignored the older, ‘rigid’ generations that were against change and were used to being wined and dined because it was it was simply what was done. I set out to be part of that change. (Maybe I still am?) I just can’t tolerate all the bullshit that you have to do in order to get somewhere. I want to be somewhere… but now. So what do I do? Turn my back on what I though I was supposed to do with my life? Ignore all the bullshit, shallow and ‘holier than thou’ attitudes that you come across on a daily basis while working in this industry? Start fresh?

Are all industries like this? Is all of capitalism like this? Get people to work for you to try to achieve your goal and once that goal is either met or impossible to reach you dispose of those so easily?  Is this what we’ve come to expect?

No matter how hard you work, how hard you try, will never be able to get everyone in the world to like the music you are hired to exploit. Get over it.
